High-Resilience Foam Core Is Best Your Simple-Pedic™ has the highest quality of any foam mattress on the market today. We use three types: High-Resiliency (HR), Natural Latex Foam, which provides a cool feeling, and Visco Memory Foam, which creates a warmer sensation. No eggshell style, convoluted foam is used in a Simple-Pedic™ mattress.
There are three categories of mattress foam (high-resiliency, conventional and starter). In general: - The denser the foam, the more durable the mattress.
- The higher the ILD, the firmer the mattress.
How do you determine foam density? Density is often a confusing term because people incorrectly relate it to the firmness or softness of the foam. In reality, foam density is just how much a piece of foam weighs. To determine the density, take a cubic foot of foam (12" x 12" x 12") and weigh it. If the foam piece weighs five pounds, the density is 5.0. If it weighs 2.5 pounds, the density is 2.5. In general, the higher the density, the more durable the foam is. The best foams for extended use are those with a density higher than 2.0. Foams with a density of less than 2.0 are most suitable for temporary use. What is the ILD? The ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection. It's the number that really refers to the firmness of a piece of foam. The process for determining the ILD is simple. Place a round metal plate (8" in diameter) on top of a piece of foam (4" x 15" x 15"). The amount of pounds of pressure required to squeeze the 4-inch piece of foam to 3 inches (25% compression) is the ILD. A low ILD, such as 10, offers little resistance and is considered an extremely soft piece of foam. On the other hand, foam that requires 46 pounds of pressure would be extra firm. Generally speaking, an ILD of 10 to 24 is considered soft, 25 to 32 is medium, 33 to 40 are firm, and those over 41 are considered extra firm. The comfort range for most people is 25 to 35. HR foam is the best for long-term use and is used in your Simple-Pedic™ luxury mattress. You can change the ILD by combining different types of foam. Foam does soften slightly with regular use. SIMPLE-PEDIC™ HIGH-RESILIENCY (HR) FOAM (BEST)- BMQ61 Super Firm – 2.9 density with 64 ILD
- BMQ35 Firm - 2.8 density with 37 ILD
- BMQ26 Medium Firm - 2.6 density with 31 ILD
- BMQ11 Soft – 2.6 density with 11 ILD
- BMQ07 Super Soft – 2.0 density with 9 ILD
High-resiliency foam is the best for long term use and used in Simple-Pedic™ luxury mattresses.
High-Resiliency (HR) foam is a polymeric urethane foam developed to achieve superior performance in comfort cushioning. (Medium & high density.) It's produced using a blend of polymer or graft polyols. High-Resilience foam has a less uniform (more random) cell structure than conventional products. The different cell structure adds support, comfort and resilience. High-Resilience foams outperform conventional foams and are defined in ASTM D3770. While conventional foams adequately satisfy the usual requirement for most end uses, BMQ61 thru BMQ07 fulfill the need for the highest quality bedding applications to provide a combination of superior comfort and durability under high-stress conditions. Recommendations: - Recommended in 6-inch thickness for sleeping comfort.
- 10 to 15-year life span.
CONVENTIONAL FOAM (BETTER)- BMH26 Medium - 1.8 density with 23 ILD
- BMH45 Firm - 1.9 density with 25 ILD
Conventional foam offers a four to five-year life expectancy when used daily. This type of foam is used primarily in moderately priced innerspring mattresses. Simple-Pedic™ luxury and custom mattresses do not use any conventional foam. Recommendations: - Recommended in 6-inch thickness for sleeping comfort.
- 4 to 5-year life span.
STARTER FOAM (GOOD)- • BMJ32 1.0 density with ILD 32
This low-density poly foam retains your body impression when used over extended periods. If used everyday, it has an approximate life span of three to six months. Recommended for temporary sleeping arrangements, camping and light duty general use. Not recommended for long-term use. Simple-Pedic™ luxury and custom mattresses do not use any starter foam. Recommendations: - Recommended in 5-inch thickness for sleeping comfort.
- 3 to 6-month life span.
